Kittens

Letter 58 – Kittens

Garrett,

We got kittens. They are so fun. They remind me that I can love. That I can love something new. They are sweet and soft. And they make me laugh.

I didn’t think I could take on kittens when Genevieve asked for them. I’m too broken to do this, I thought to myself when she asked. But she really wanted kittens and one day I just said, okay, let’s go get some.

Kevin took Genevieve to the shelter to pick them out. They aren’t litter mates, but they are two boys who are so adorable and different from another. Even though they aren’t litter mates, we got them so young that they slept together and spent all their early months together and now they’re bonded.

You would like these kittens, Garrett, although I’m sure you would sympathize with Koda, who is jealous. He does not like these guys very much. No way. We often tease him when he gets jealous of our attention on the cats. Are you the best kitten of them all, Koda? we ask him. Because he always comes first whenever we call one of the others. He shows us that he can play harder, he can be cuter, than any old kitten. I’m sure you’d wrap your arms around him and say, aw, Koda. It’s okay. You’re still the best. And Koda would tell you, that’s so true.

The kittens are juveniles now, and adventurous. We’ve slowly begun to let them outside into our back yard. The patches of snow and the fence keep them contained so they can gain a sense of place. We have so much love for these little beings. I cannot tell you how helpful it has been to have them in our home and shower them with all this love that we found somewhere. Almost like, look at us, we can still love and be loved by furry animals. How great is that?

Thanks, little kittens. And thank you, Genevieve, for wanting these cats. I love you.
