The Sweater

Letter 78 – The Sweater

Dear Garrett,

My mom sent me a gift. She knitted a sweater. I can only think of it as our sweater because I know she thought of you when she made it for me. My mother, who has macular degeneration, knitted this. I think of it as ours, and how can I not think of you when I put it on? And how can you not be here when I wear it?

Here is what she said on the card that she sent:

I started your jacket in April. It has flaws, tears, and lots of love.

She knitted her grief for you into this sweater. And for me. If my mother dies before me, I know she will wrap you in all her love. Both of my parents will.
