Letter 73 – I’m Talking to Your Friends
Dear Garrett,
I feel that I am winding down, but there a few things left I want to say. This is for your friends.
Jonathan. Thank you. You were there until almost the end. I know that you cared. I appreciate that you were there for as long as you could be. Thank you, Jonathan, for being my son’s friend.
Solana. It is ok not to have picked up the phone. I don’t know that Garrett could have heard you if you had. Please let that go. I know that you and Jonathan and my son had wonderful times, and I’m happy that he had that with you. You were his friend, and I thank you for that.
Rihanna. Garrett had the most fun time at your quinceanera. He made us come in when we came to pick him up because he was so delighted to celebrate your day. He wanted us to meet you. Thank you for sticking close to him all those years, and I thank you for being his friend. You were important to him.
Hope and Keri June. I didn’t know you well, except for the stories that Garrett shared with us about his adventures with you. Thank you for being there.
To the younger boy who was at Garrett’s gathering, thank you for telling me you thought he was pretty great. I did, too, and I really appreciate that you told me that. I will always remember it.
Ava. You already know.
And Diego. When I saw you at the gathering, you looked so changed. I touched your hair, which had grown long, and saw the gentle being that you are. Even though I hate what my son was exposed to and did when he was with you, and even though I hate what you were exposed to and did, I don’t hate you. Please find a way out for yourself, Diego. If anyone finds a way out, please let it be you. Fight for that gentle person. He deserves another chance.
